Soon my book will be available! Becoming a World Citizen: A Guidebook for a Global Perspective! Stay tuned. Shortly after 9/11, I changed my profession from real estate management to building and serving my community In a different way. I became active in non-profit organizations working towards creating positive change in the world, primarily the work of Vermont Peace Academy. I have found the Peace Academy's work focuses on what is right in the world more than on what is wrong. I have organized many youth trips to United Nations for the celebration of International Day of Peace. In 2004, I traveled around the world with my husband and our 15-year-old daughter. Since that time, my publications and presentations have included topics such as: World Citizenship, Qualities of World Citizens, and Traveling as if Communities Mattered. In 2010, I lived at Buduburam Refugee Camp (West Africa) for one month. I founded One Step One World. We were a micro-lending organization with a sewing school and an adult literacy program. In 2012 we stopped our programs because most refugees returned home to Liberia. I worked 10 years for Vermont Migrant Education returning to Vermont dairy farms (I grew up on a 35 head Jersey farm and I used to be a milk tester) as an English teacher and support person to migrant workers. This work has simply been the Best! I have former students who now have families and are successful business owners back in their home countries! Since 2018 my husband and I have been working together to renovate houses. We are having great fun working side by side. We also moved to a Federal Style Brick house just a few miles from my childhood farm and we opened Homestead Antiques & Collectibles. Life is good.

FounderOne Step One World Apr 2010 - 2012My daughter Lydia visited the Budaburam Refugee Camp in Ghana five years ago. Initially, this camp was a model UN camp, home to 8,000 Liberians, mostly single women and children who escaped from Liberia during the Civil Wars of the 1990’s. When Lydia visited the camp the population had swelled to 40,000. Lydia met a single mother and we started to sponsor her daughter's education and now she is a healthy teenage girl. As the years passed we began to question the results of only sending money and we wondered how could we create more change - sustainable change. We spoke with the mother about this and she began meeting with other women leaders to generate ideas. They have developed a detailed plan for micro-lending within the camp. Initially, 31 women will be loaned money for home businesses, including creating and selling African textiles, selling fruits and vegetables, opening hair salons, and selling used clothing. Women all over the world are the pulse of their communities when provided with the resources to help themselves and their families. Simple, basic needs can be met when they become empowered with the resources they need to create change.
