I have a portfolio of experience working in local government, the NHS, third-sector, research and private sector. I am thrilled to be sharing a passion for public engagement, science and communicating complex information at the Science Education and Public Engagement office in EMBL. Previously, as a Public Health Specialist with Leeds City Council, i loved developing participatory health communication resources and campaigns. With a particular focus on child and family health, physical activity and substance use, I gained extensive experience of co-developing and commissioning health campaigns, research and reports. I graduated with an MSc in Public Health and Health Promotion in 2022. I was also a journalist for 10 years, working across several national women’s magazine titles in the UK and New Zealand. I also have an MSc in Occupational Therapy and worked as a clinician in a variety of roles in mental health from 2009-2016 including as a care coordinator for a Community Mental Health Team. From April 2016-October 2018 I worked at NHS England, supporting strategic policy makers in the Commissioning Policy Unit to engage effectively with health commissioners. I led the Mindful Employer project in Leeds from 2013-2015, enabling employers across the city to take a positive attitude to mental health at work. I've also worked as partnership coordinator for WorkPlace Leeds, which is part of Leeds Mind. As a journalist, I wrote a weekly column for the Yorkshire Evening Post from 2013-2015. Previously, I worked in-house at titles including Best, Bella, Real People and Good Housekeeping and freelance for Marie Claire, Woman's Own and Cosmopolitan. I was also features editor of Woman's Day, New Zealand's biggest-selling women's weekly magazine, from 2005-6. I continue to write freelance features for the Yorkshire Post.
