I started a "Literacy Boot Camp", a pilot program to help underachieving Middle School children who were not at their grade level in reading and writing. I met with six students three hours a day five days a week for reading (lots of reading) and writing exercises and activities. We did a play, a news cast as well as poem reading and writing and song lyrics. I enjoyed working with this small group and I strongly believe the program (with a few modifications) would have developed into something very worthwhile. Unfortunately, the "powers that be" went a different way to utilize the grant funding. In these hard economic times, I was not really all that surprised. From working as a freshmen English teacher, taking time off and then jumping into this program, I learned a lot about what it means to work in the education field. I look forward to working with other underperforming children in the next coming year.

I worked for two years as an English teacher with all Freshmen students. This was a "baptism by fire" as I has just obtained my licence to teach and Wareham High School has an immediate opening the Fall of 2008. I learned so much about what it takes to teach. Mostly, it is long hours developing plans, deciding the levels for each student and, mostly, what it takes to get through those students who are capable, but unwilling to do the work (for whatever reasons). It was difficult. It was frustrating, But the challenges it offered as I interacted with students and faculty helped me to determine where I will fit in the education field in the future. There is a mix of idealism and realism that has to somehow come together in a meaningful way in order to be successful in this business.
