About Sally Sutherland
I am a socially active designer and design researcher based in Brighton in the UK. I am currently the co-course leader for the MA Sustainable Design course, a Postgraduate Lecturer in Design and an AHRC DesignStar funded practice based Doctoral Candidate at the University of Brighton. I have a Masters degree in Sustainable Design, a BA in Three Dimensional Design and 15 years experience working in Lighting Design and Product development in the UK and Australia.My research aims to create meaningful dialogue using critical thinking and designed artefacts. My research interests are maternal, parental and infant health, Metadesign, Ontological Design, Radical Methodologies, Design Anthropology; how design can positively impact health inequalities; and the impact of design on everyday life, behaviours, norms, practices and belief systems. My creative exploratory design research focuses on culture, gender, food, feeding and motherhood. My recent work explores how the discipline of design reinforces gender based violence and oppressive class politics. I am the lead of the Centre for Design History Sustainablity Strand, and a co-founder of the Radical Methodologies Research Group (RaM) at the University of Brighton.
