Having recently finished my PhD in woodland ecology I am now working as the Scottish Conservation Officer at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.I’ve been studying/working in the field of ecology for 17 years however. Over this time I’ve been lucky enough to pick up really interesting and diverse work e.g. carrying out baseline vegetation surveys in Madagascar, working at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh extracting DNA from fungal spores, presenting a TV programme for Channel 4 and spending lots of time with large data sets! I absolutely love problem solving, strategic thinking and working with data. My most recent project involved designing and coding a mathematical model of a natural system for a government body, which was to ultimately be used as a decision-making tool to test real world management scenarios prior to implementation. My role at RBGE requires project management skills in order to bring conservation projects in on time and in budget, frequently working with stakeholders from a broad range of backgrounds e.g. scientists, landowners/farmers, horticulturalists, politicians, decision makers. I regularly use the programme R (for advanced modelling techniques e.g. GAM, GLM, GLMM, as well as machine learning methods e.g. CT’s), Excel (for preparing large data sets of 200,000 + data points) and ARC GIS for spatial data analysis. I have experience of management, being a line manager of other employees at RBGE and as a project supervisor for MSc students. In addition, I am an excellent communicator with demonstrable presentation (e.g. winner of the Core Research Providers Presentation Competition 2016) and writing skills, both scientific (having published several scientific papers) and for the general public (e.g. articles published in The Scotsman). I have also been able to demonstrate science communication skills as a presenter of a Channel 4 natural history programme, as well as during appearances on BBC Landward.
