We fall short on fulfilling our potential without belonging to communities where we meet the roles of learner & guide. I've lived in 4 countries from East to West; always learning on belonging, building community & bridging the gaps. When I'm not nerding out as a writer, analyst & educator; I film, sing, read poetry, play music, paint & host mindfulness sessions to facilitate regulation, awareness & ease. Select highights of experience, publications and awards are listed below.Bio: A cultural studies analyst and communications lecturer, Salma’s scholarly pedagogy and community-based research are grounded in theory and practice. Doctoral research project examines how regional & diasporic SWANA identities are portrayed and depicted in cinema across transnational streaming services, VR productions, and select SNS productions. Combining ethnography, content analysis, policy analysis, alongside industry and production analysis aids in analyzing current industry patterns to help us unravel how the works of Arab identifying scriptwriters & directors are situated within hegemonic systems and are perceived by a milieu of audiences. Salma holds a MSc degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and has a well-established career in journalism, film and media production as a reporter, producer, director, and anchor/host with an emphasis on the arts, politics, social change and gender. Her attention has been focused on research and teaching at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, and formerly at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. Additionally, as an interdisciplinary mindfulness guide, Salma has adopted a holistic approach to weaving various modalities in support of clients & community members across Vancouver, Europe and Egypt as they grapple with motions of integration, resilience, and belonging since 2016.Salma’s dedication to research, teaching, collaboration, and mentorship thrives on her ability to navigate obstacles and forge connections amongst contrasting groups while learning and guiding from a place that is compassionate, inquisitive and insightful. Her scholarship rests upon analyzing the intricate intersections between film, media, technology and social change; positioning multidimensional representations from the Global South and the Arab Diaspora in North America within a global context.
