About Salma Hussein, Ed.D., Licsw

Salma Hussein is a K-12 school administrator who has called Minnesota home since migrating from Somalia in 1996. She currently serves as a principal at Gideon Pond Elementary in The Burnsville-Eagan-Savage school district. Salma is deeply committed to social justice and is active in the community, especially as a mentor to youth. Salma and her sister co-founded G.I.R.L.S (Girls Initiative in Recreation and Leisurely Sports- GirlsWin.org). GIRLS is a non-profit organization that offers a safe space for women and especially girls in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood (where the dominant minority is Somali) to exercise weekly and partake in sports. What started as a labor of love during Salma’s college years has now flourished into a structured culturally sensitive basketball coaching program that has built relationships with the community it serves.As an educator and administrator, Salma has an extensive track record of being a bridge between communities and facilitating strength and love-based systems change. At the Administrative level, Salma is a compassionate, humane leader that connects staff and scholars towards the highest resolution, seeing the intersection of many issues that impact their journey in education, separate and together. We are at an important time in education, well overdue for systemic change. Salma is dedicated to building community ties and advocating for a strength-based systemic change in education. She champions a reimagined educational system that recognizes and values the contributions of every member, including students, staff, parents, and local community members.
