About Sam A.
I am currently enrolled on a MA Law Conversion starting in September 2023 and am making the transition from a successful career in law enforcement to advocacy with aspirations to become a barrister.I was a police officer in the Metropolitan Police for 3.5 years. I excelled during my initial training at Hendon where I developed a foundational legal understanding and received the Top Student award. I then spent the majority of my time in the police working on an Emergency Response Policing Team in Peckham. My primary role was to attend 999 and 101 calls and I experienced a great variety of emergency and non-emergency incidents whilst policing in one of the busiest and most challenging areas of London. I also expanded my knowledge by doing a variety of attachments and working in specialist units such as the Violent Crime Taskforce (VCTF). My time in the police honed my communication skills and my ability to work under pressure and exposed me to the criminal justice system. I have a wealth of experience in practical legal contexts including police procedures, building case files, and court procedures. I also have a keen interest in the law, specifically public law which will transfer well to a career at the bar. Prior to joining the police I was a teacher and taught English as a Foreign Language for 5 years. I taught both privately and for language schools in a number of countries including Japan and Russia. I also have an aptitude for languages, having learnt Russian at university and taught myself Japanese, Spanish and Greek.

Police Constable
I spent 3.5 years working in the Metropolitan Police Service in London as a police constable. I began training in Hendon in January 2020 where I was provided with the basic legal knowledge and practical skills required to police effectively. I excelled in my study of the law and police procedure and received the award for Top Student as a result. Upon completion of my training and achievement of Independent Patrol Status I was then attached to a Safer Neighbourhood Team for 6 months. I learnt the basics of community policing and was given responsibility over my wards outstanding arrest warrants for the duration of this time. I also gathered intelligence for, applied for, and executed two search warrants and a complex closure order on three squats during this time. After 6 months I went to an Emergency Response and Policing Team in Southwark and was responsible for attending 999 and 101 calls to police for approximately 3 years. I responded to a vast array of incidents: domestic abuse; mental health emergencies; serious assaults and murders including stabbings and gang violence; major and critical incidents; serious road traffic collisions; serious sexual assaults and high risk missing people. I also developed my skills by undertaking further training such as Level 2 public order training and taser training and was regularly deployed to major events such as football matches, the Queen's funeral and the King's Coronation. I did attachments to various units to broaden my experience such as working on secondary investigation and case handling in the Case Progression Unit and My Investigation Support Teams and handling the reporting of missing people and working closely with the Ops Inspector in the Local Resolution Team.In my last 3 months I worked in the Violent Crime Taskforce, a specialist proactive unit targeting knife crime and high harm robbery offenders across South London before deciding to leave the police and pursue law.
