Profile bio

About Sam(Antha) Meier

Currently, I am the Archivist for Discovery at Special Collections and Archives, Cline Library, Northern Arizona University.Previously, I served as a Library Technician with the Veterans History Project (VHP) at the Library of Congress after spending the summer of 2018 as a Junior Fellow. In May of 2018, I received my Masters in Archival Studies from the School of Library, Archival, and Information Studies (SLAIS) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, British Columbia. There, I focused my studies on addressing the information needs of diverse communities, particularly First Nations and Native American peoples. To complement my academic experience, I worked as an archival technician at the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs, an Indigenous-led political organization, in addition to digitizing archival documents and rare books at the UBC Library Digitization Centre. Previously, I served as an administrative assistant for Great Potential Press, a small non-profit press based in Tucson, Arizona. Before that, I acted as the sole researcher/assistant for The Public Good Projects, a non-profit media organization in New York City. In 2012, I developed and founded what came to be known as the Identities vertical at Mic.com. Under my editorial direction (later, together with Thomas McBee) Mic expanded its coverage to include social justice issues. I coordinated, edited, and promoted content on topics including sexism and gender inequality, sexual orientation and LGBTQ politics, gender identity, racism and racial prejudice for a millennial audience. My own writing at Mic focused on issues of sex, gender, and sexuality in contemporary politics, with a particular emphasis on new media. I am currently at work on a non-fiction book based on my award-winning undergraduate thesis research. The book explores the women behind Nanny Goat Productions, the first-ever feminist comic book publishing company in America.
