I have always loved traveling and learning, so after about 10 years teaching English in Asia, I decided to try to start a company that combined both of those passions. And thus was born AEA in 2005. As a youngster, I was fortunate to travel and study abroad extensively in Latin America and Europe, but I had wanted to visit Japan in particular since I was in elementary school. Fortunately, the JET Program gave me that opportunity. I highly, highly, highly recommend the JET Program! The following was my work path after graduating UT (Austin) in 1995: Osaka, Japan (1995-97, JET)Chongqing, China (1998-99, Sichuan International Studies University)Vientiane, Laos, (1999-2001, US Embassy, International School, Lao-American College)Bangkok, Thailand (2001-2002, Chulalongkorn University)Melbourne, Australia (2002-2003)Fahilebo, East Timor (2002-2003)Cairo, Egypt, Israel & West Bank (2003-2004)Houston, Texas (2003-2009 University of Houston and Rice University, volunteer for AFS)Saigon, Vietnam (2006-2008 while starting AEA)Portland, Oregon (2009-present)Sam is a JET Program alumni; the author of 5 language books; worked for Airbnb as their first Portland Community Manager way back when; and lives in Portlandia, Oregon.

Cross Cultural ConsultantDfa Intercultural Global Solutions Llc Jan 2013 - Jan 2015Portland, Oregon AreaI worked with DFA from time to time as a cross-cultural, relocation specialist.I always enjoyed meeting and helping those who were relocating. It reminded me of the times that I did it regularly, and we always found that we had a lot in common.I still work with DFA, but I had to put an end date in there, or it would have looked like that is my primary job. -
Community ManagerAirbnb Aug 2011 - Jun 2012Portland, Oregon AreaI was lucky enough to be one of Airbnb's first community managers. We worked with the company when they were 'small.' Aside from lunch Brian and Nate, meetings with investors, and close relationships with many of the key decision makers at that time, I was proudest to convince legal to put on the website for the first time important information that I crafted to alert hosts of their liability risks and how to protect themselves. This came about from meetings I had with hosts, which was my primary job. I met with hosts who had questions or wanted to improve their listings. Or complain. I also met with others who were interested in hosting, but not yet comfortable with the idea. My main goal was to make people comfortable sharing their homes with 'strangers' and improving upon what they already had. I met lots of great people and still keep in touch with many of them. I was able to do this in my free time, which made this job possible as I was growing AEA, the company that I now run. -

TeacherVientiane International School, Laos Nov 1999 - Nov 2000VIS was an awesome place to work. The kids and their parents were from all over the world and the staff were my friends and full of humor. I played pick up basketball games on Wednesday nights on the outdoor court. Laos has a special place in my memory, and I'm so glad I was able to live there before the streets were paved.

LecturerSichuan International Studies University, China Aug 1998 - Jun 1999Lectured and taught English majors courses with enticing titles such as Critical Thinking Skills, Argumentative Essay Writing and American Culture. But most of the learning for my students and myself took place in office hours on the roof of the teacher's building where we discussed politics for hours and hours and hours. Chongqing is where I perfected my impeccable Chongqing accent, which means that I can say things in Chinese that no one will understand outside of the province of 33 million people.

High School Teacher (Alt)Jet Program, Japan Jul 1995 - May 1997JET was my first job in Asia, and the impetus for my 10+ incredible years teaching, studying and living on the other side of the Pacific. I lived in Osaka and learned to joke in the Osaka dialect. But more importantly, I made life-long friends and found my first home-away-from-home.
