South West

Countryside management work across a number of sites in the Southwest of England, with a particular focus on sensitive land clearance and habitat creation.I was a site supervisor on a large scale flood defence scheme in the Avonmouth area. This involved coordinating works with the principal contractor BAM Nuttall and the Ecology team from Mot Macdonald.Day to day duties included: planning the schedule of works. Arranging for any necessary permits. Completion of daily risk assessments. Supervision of workers on the ground, including heavy machinery. Ensuring Environmental Agency standards were adhered to. Liaising with subcontractors and suppliers. General admin for overtime, plant check sheets, toolbox talks etc.

Responsible for the running of the Alphonse Island Dive Centre. This includes all aspects of client safety, enjoyment and experience. Responsible for a number of leisure activities as well as SCUBA diving, including: island bicycle tours, nature and bird watching experiences and guided hikes. Management of both local and expat staff. Maintenance and servicing of all equipment. Liason role between local conservation NGO and resort management.

Alphonse Island

• Management of Alphonse Island conservation centre, including direct supervision of local staff and overseas volunteers.• Responsible for the implementation of the Alphonse Island management plan and a range of conservation activities, including the supervision of in water activities, including SCUBA diving.• Weekly presentations to tourists.• Maintaining equipment, inventories and souvenir shop accounts.• Maintained very good relations with all stakeholders on the island.• Developed and accuired funding for new projects including: Assessment of the Environmental Impact of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) on the Outer islands of Seychelles.

New Island, Falkland Islands

• Day to day running of the Island. Responsible for up keep and maintenance of all buildings, vehicles and equipment as well as maintaining power, water and gas supply.• Assisting scientists with data collection and fieldwork.• Assisting film crews with location scouting and moving equipment around the island. • Meeting and greeting cruise ship passengers, giving talks about the nature of the island.

Praslin, Seychelles

Scientific diver on a USAID funded project called REEF RESCUERS.• Construction of rope and net nurseries for the growing of coral fragments.• Collection and fragmentation of specific coral species to be grown in nurseries.• Monitoring of coral growth rates and survival, as well as baseline monitoring of existing reef. • Assisting with maintenance of diving compressor, boat engine, and dive equipment.

Wakatobi, Indonesia

• Assisted training of PADI open water (OW) advanced open water (AOW) and divemaster (DM) students and conducted PADI scuba reviews.• Led identification dives for reef ecology modules• Assisted and supervised PhD and undergraduate students with projects, such as; transects and quadrat samples of sponge species, video monitoring of wrasse cleaning stations, sponge and coral sample collection, GIS mapping project.

Aldabra, Seychelles

• A range of scientific monitoring including: Butterfly fish transects, in water turtle capture and tagging, mangrove fish transects (own study), as well as terrestrial work including: sea bird data collection, turtle and giant tortoise surveys, goat eradication project and ranger patrols.• Supervised diving operations, inc. compressor maintenance and tank filling.
