About Sam Barratt
I currently work as Chief of Education, Youth and Advocacy for UN Environment. In this role I lead our work to support Universities to decarbonise, become nature positive and engage Governments on evolving curriculum and the education system to be aligned with environmental requirements of today.As part of our non-formal education programme, I co-founded the Playing for the Planet Alliance which works with the video gaming industry to integrate green activations in games and take reduce their carbon footprint. We also work with the Scout and Guide movements on a range of environmental activations such as Earth Tribe and Tide Turners, with TED-Ed to launch Earth School during lock-down and I also lead on the Olympics relationship on a soon-to-be-launched Sport for Nature initiative. Finally, I also coordinate the advocacy in the Ecosystems Division where we train staff, commission new reports on issues such as wildfires and plastic pollution and maximise the reach and influence of our programme. I am pretty good at building new partnerships, building dynamic can-do teams, making big ideas come to life and navigating incoming flak to bring ideas unscathed and out into the real-world. Before this era of UN-ery, I worked for Avaaz and Oxfam, which was a lot of fun, and sometimes missed.

CurrentIn this role, I oversee our work on formal and non-formal education as well as the advocacy programme of the Ecosystems Division. For the education brief, we work to support transformation in Higher Education by securing to decarbonise, nudge student behaviour and increase their commitments to nature. On Non-Formal education, I launched the Tide Turners programme with Scouts and Girl Guides, lead the Sports brief with the Olympics and co-founded the Playing for the Planet Alliance which works with the video gaming industry to act for the environment. I also lead on coordinating advocacy work in the Division, training staff, supporting the launch of new reports on wild fires and more. It's busy.
