Based in Victoria the business operates on a national scale through a network of agents and stockists. This is my family business and as part of the succession plan I entered the business for a 6 – 12 month period to gauge if it will be a good fit for me later on.My time spent in the company was spent developing new business in the agricultural division.

NZX Agribusiness owns three Melbourne based businesses; Australian Crop Forecasters, Profarmer Australia and Clear Grain Exchange. Most of my involvement has been centered around the Clear Grain Exchange business, a national online trading platform for grain. Originally employed in a seasonal customer service type role I was promoted within 4 weeks of contract commencement to WA regional manager. As such my duties involved:- Business development and strategy- Relationship management- Event organisation- Marketing (all mediums)- Product development- Facilitating information transfer to stakeholders- Exhibiting at field days and conferences- Presenting at industry eventsI thoroughly enjoyed this role. Not only is Clear Grain Exchange an innovative and viable service, it presents an opportunity to revolutionise execution in grain marketing. I developed a wide range of skills whilst at NZX; reviewing business memorandums, product development and release, sales and marketing and gained valuable insight into tactical and strategic business planning.

Kintamani Farms in a large hay and cereal cropping operation 160km north of Perth in WA. This family run operation runs across 20,000 acres in the Victoria Plains of Western Australia. I was flown over to work for the hay/harvest season as a fulltime farmhand. This job entailed:Operation of heavy machineryWorking consistently long hoursIdentifying threats (fire hazards, plant disease, weeds etc.)Working with a teamLogistics operationsUtilising basic agronomy and soil scienceBeing previously solely focused on livestock and working in temperate climates, I pursued the offer to gain an insight into the cropping world and to work in a climate outside my range of experience. Bungeeltap Pastoral is a commercial cattle operation spanning across four properties in the Macedon ranges. This family operated business has a strong emphasis on producing exceptionally bred on a commercial scale. I worked as the sole fulltime farmhand across the four properties managing over 1000 head of cattle. This role required:Working independently Being adaptable to continually changing circumstances and conditionsPrioritising job orderComprehension of the whole farm systemCarrying out animal husbandry and welfare practicesWorking in line with strong vision and on farm ethosMy time at Bungeeltap Pastoral allowed me to combine my scientific understanding with on farm practices on a daily basis. This was particularly true during and leading up to calving; monitoring animal condition and nutritional manipulation. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety provided by the role and the opportunity to turn theory into practice. I left the role to broaden my agronomy experience in a cropping operation.

In 2012 I ran a small business in the training, rehabilitating and selling of horses in the New England area whilst completing my studies. Goomallee Pastoral is a family operated cattle station in the northern tablelands. My duties included:Helping to establish a dairy feedlotGeneral farm dutiesAssisting in animal husbandry and welfare practices (pregnancy testing, vaccinating, weaning etc.)This role allowed me to further develop my livestock handling skills and understand the limitations of agricultural theory in practice. Working at Goomallee provided the opportunity to help establish a new venture for the family (dairy feedlot).
