Sam's role in the WSP Fire team included, but was not limited to:- Acting as lead fire engineering consultant on a variety of large, complex and prestigious projects.- Managing teams to deliver projects.- Mentoring and training of junior staff.- Business development both externally and within the fire engineering industry. - Developing new standardised fire engineered solutions as a part of WSP's fire engineering technical committee.Notable projects includeRiver Plate House - LondonDevelopment of a fire strategy for a new build, high quality office space in the centre of London. Due to the high value of the land, the gross:net area of this building was crucial to the success of the scheme. By adopting various fire engineered solutions, Sam was able to minimise the spatial impact of fire safety measures which would be required under standard design guidance, maximising the lettable area in the scheme.Vauxhall Bondway - LondonLead fire engineer on this proposed 180m high mixed use scheme in Vauxhall. Fire engineered solutions will include justification of large open plan apartments, rationalisation of the number of staircases within the building and allowing Fire fighting lifts to be accessed directly from the main reception space.CrossrailVarious works on Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street and Paddington stations including due dilligence reviews of other consultants work and construction advice from Stage F onwards.

Sam's role at Hoare Lea was to produce fire strategies, CFD modelling studies and provide general fire engineering consultancy on a variety of projects across all sectors. Notable projects include:Caprice Gold - IstanbulSam co-authored the fire strategy for this 54m high multi-use hotel building with nine basement storeys. The local fire codes specified many costly and inefficient fire safety measures. With reference to both UK and other international fire codes, he was able to cut back on many measures which were found to be redundant without compromising on safety. 3 Merchant Square - WestminsterSam worked as the lead fire engineer on the development of the first building of the upcoming Merchant Square regeneration project in Westminster. Sam undertook a CFD Modelling study to demonstrate that with the provision of sprinklers and automatic fire detection, the large open plan duplex apartment designs provided a level of safety in excess of that implied by a code compliant design and, as such, were acceptable. The strategy also included a mechanical smoke extraction system to justify extended travel distances within the common corridors and the use of impulse fans to allow the energy centre to be ventilated via the basement car park.West Cheshire CollegeSam was responsible for producing three fire strategies, four CFD modelling reports and providing construction advice for this £41 million development of two new sites. The strategies relied heavily on CFD modelling, which was undertaken in order to justify the 4.5m rule and remove the need for fire resistant glazing required to be provided on compartment boundaries. As the design progressed further value engineering works were undertaken, including a full structural fire engineering assessment of both sites and a compartmentation assessment in order to justify extended compartment sizes of up to 5,000m2.
