About Sam Bennetts
As a geographer and computer scientist, my work focuses on bridging between the social, environmental, and computer sciences to advance our knowledge of human-environment interactions and support earth observation science for climate action. My experience as an applied scientist and GIS developer had led me to work on a variety of environmental data projects ranging from urbanization and land cover change studies, to satellite-based geostatistical modeling of glacier flow dynamics and sea level rise, to open source tool development using stratified sampling techniques to help guide in-field sampling efforts. In addition to my more technical disciplines, my work is every bit as focused on building community. To me, partnership, and interdisciplinary knowledge sharing is key to decode environmental complexity and translate science in a way which advances practitioner literacy and technological capacity equitably so that earth observation tools best serve regeneration efforts.

Director Of Product And Registry Systems
Regen Registry Product Manager
Current
Science & Registry Program Manager
CurrentAs the Science & Registry Program Manager, I oversaw the development and implementation of the Regen Registry Program, which supported communities in developing and deploying crediting protocols.
Applied Scientist & Gis Developer
- Co-developed 42-page Regen Registry Methodology for GHG and Co-Benefits in Grazing Systems, combining remote sensing data with in-field measurements to train machine learning algorithms for carbon stock estimation
- Built an open-source toolset to automate soil carbon estimation using high-resolution satellite, including stratification tools, a Sentinel-2 imagery pre-processing kit, and machine-learning based algorithms for.
- Supported Microsoft purchase of 119,000 soil carbon credits in one of the largest-ever soil carbon credit issuances in Australia, coordinated outreach with 4 Australian ranchers, wrote thirteen 40-page monitoring reports
Geographic Information Systems Consultant
Supported in a local initiative connecting local Vermont communities and landowners with resources about to adopt land management practices to cultivate and preserve healthy forests to help slow the effects of climate change in the region. My work focused on applying GIS to develop maps to inform land owners of opportunities to connect with local.
Professional Research Assistant: Urban Greenspace & Environmental Justice
- Using high-resolution satellite imagery and advanced geospatial analysis, I mapped urban greenspace distribution in Denver and Seattle, correlating it with socioeconomic data to reveal disparities in access to green.
- Created detailed land cover classifications and NDVI maps for urban areas in Denver and Seattle using high-resolution satellite imagery
- Conducted geospatial analysis to correlate urban vegetation distribution with socioeconomic factors
- Investigated the relationship between urban greenspace access and community mental health outcomes
- Contributed to research informing environmental justice initiatives and urban planning policies
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Researched sedimentation dynamics and landscape change in the Nooksack River Basin in Washington state using a combination of lidar, sediment connectivity modeling, photogrammetry, and field methods.
Artic Glaciology Research Associate
- Studied the origin and nature of fast moving, "surging" glaciers in the artic to advance scientific understanding of the effects of environmental change impacts on arctic landscapes and sea level rise. My work focused.
- Conducted on-site data collection in Svalbard, Norway, including laser altimeter data and aerial imagery acquisition
- Developed and implemented a convolutional neural network to classify complex crevasse patterns on glaciers using high-resolution satellite imagery
- Generated thematic maps and time-series analyses to visualize the evolution of crevasse patterns and ice deformation during glacial surge events
- Supported in testing the ICESAT-2 laser altimeter (ATLAS) to measure land ice elevation
