I am fortunate that my background in plant ecology and landscape design, combined with long practical experience have given me considerable depth and breadth of knowledge and understanding concerning the behaviour of vegetation, especially woody plants, in urban environments. This knowledge encompasses the physiology of plants, their reproductive behaviour, their inter-dependencies with their physical and biological habitats, and their responses to urban stressors such as de-icing alts, pavement and building heat gain, drought, low soil fertility and air pollution. I am interested in developing more robust, community based, adaptive and sustainable urban planting design, implementation and management.A signifiant area of related interest is in the development of adaptive management strategies for understanding and integrating the social needs of individuals, groups, communities and institutions into the sustainable management of urban public and private greenspace. A key component of this interest is increasing community literacy around the biological resilience of urban vegetation and its role in sustainable urban landscapes. My formal teaching and consultancy are both venues for developing this interest.
