About Sam Blacker
I am a Professor of Exercise Physiology and Nutrition at the University of Chichester, with over 20 years’ experience conducting research to improve health and performance in physically demanding occupations. I have worked in industry and academia, undertaking research and consultancy for Defence, Emergency Services an Industry organisations in the UK and overseas. My work involves gathering data and information to develop evidence-based solutions to benefit end-users. Projects have included the development of role-related physical employment standards (PES), use of wearable sensors to quantify the physical demands of work and training, and investigating nutritional strategies to support physical development and recovery. I am accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENR). I am currently the Programme Co-ordinator for the MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Nutrition course at the University of Chichester and the BASES Accredited Laboratory Director. I am a member of the organising committee for the International Conference on related physical employment standards, have been on the Scientific Committee for the International Conference for Solder Physical Performance (2017, 2020 & 2023) and Secretary of the NATO HFM-269 panel (Combat Integration: Implications for PES, 2016-2019).

Teaching Fellow (Part Time)
I delivered lectures and practical classes to undergraduate and postgraduate students covering physiological responses exercise and research methods. I mentored an M.Sc. student throughout their independent project and assisted B.Sc. students with planning and undertaking final year projects. I also designed and delivered practical sports science taster days to secondary school students through the universities widening participation scheme.
Exercise Physiologist (Part Time)
Alongside studying for my Ph.D. I provided support to the British Army assisting in data collection of two separate projects examining interventions to improve fitness and load carriage performance during basic training. I worked within a team taking measurements of participants of body composition, muscular strength and oxygen uptake during treadmill walking and running. I also provided research support to studies examining the health, nutrition and fitness of high school students in the UAE.

Employment split between two posts: As a Nutrition and Food Science Research Assistant I used techniques including High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Mass in laboratory based research. As a Laboratory Technician I maintained a physiology laboratory where I conducted risk assessments, prepared and taught undergraduate physiology and biochemistry classes.
