My name is Sam Cairns and I am an 19 year old male previously working part-time in the field of Information Technology and currently living and studying a Bachelor of Information Technology at Deakin in Waurn Ponds Geelong. As a secondary school student, I found my passion and intrigue in studying math and sciences. The idea of learning about the world around me and how all things worked has always fascinated and driven me to work hard and learn about the world of STEMs. In Year 9 I was fortunate enough to received a place at Federation University over school holidays to attend a statewide forum exploring the area of STEMs, and this is where my fascination and aptitude for Technology of all types was born! Such an invaluable experience to stimulate my mind and provide a platform with regards to my problem-solving aptitude and abilities. Outside of school, I am a keen self taught guitarist and musician, who enjoys playing basketball and indoor 5 a side soccer otherwise known as Futsal. Over the past five years I have lead my team to premierships as well as volunteered my time to referee the younger age groups within the association. My parents have always instilled the need to be proactive and give back – be part of the solution not part of a problem! Over the course of my secondary schooling, I was fortunate to participate a vast range of forums and activities such as the Western Bulldogs Youth Leadership Program, Stems forums and the 2021 National Youth Science Forum. All these experiences gave me confidence and resulted (I believe) in numerous school awards, peer leadership activities and solo performances at the annual Marian’s Got Talent where I play the electric guitar, coming in a very respectable 2nd in my final year! In November 2021 I successfully completed my VCE which was an achievement in itself. Uncertainty, upheaval, stops, starts and home learning distractions were not the ideal lead up to my final exams but if this has taught me anything it is to be resilient, adaptable and believe in my ability to complete what ever I put my mind to.
