(Sam Coombes and Rich Coombes) and the Batlow Apples, formerly Batlow Fruit Co-Operative. Coombes Bros. approached Batlow Apples in late 2011 with the idea of developing a locally produced, 100% real fruit alcoholic apple cider. The co-op were supportive of the idea, following a presentation to the board by Coombes Bros, it was signed off and we were in business. We then set about developing a product, from branding, through to liquid through to sales and distribution network. At the outset we were told by an industry veteran that a small format (330ml) product was not achievable in the Australian market. Within 10 months we had liquid in a bottle and ready to hit the streets. Batlow soon became one of the key players within a booming Apple Cider market. Batlow is one of the most well known and highly regarded Cider brands in Australia, supplying some of the best venues in the country and distributing to International Markets. Batlow Cider is a small team and my responsibilities have been founder, marketing, communication, branding and new product. -

What started as a side hustle quickly turned into an opportunity for a business. The Critical Slide Society was a blog that aggregated content from a variety of alternative surf industry creatives. Through the blog we launched a collection of T-Shirts and Boardshorts. Within a short period of time we acknowledged the opportunity for a brand that appealed to those looking for an alternative to the big surf brands that existed. The Critical Slide Society was voted best boardshort designers '2013, 2014 and 2017'. This result put The Critical Slide Society on the industry map. Now, with an enviable stockist list including Ron Herman (Japan), Freaks (Japan), General Pants, The Iconic, Urban Outfitters, ASOS, David Jones amongst many others, the brand has recently opened a flagship store in Bondi and has grown their DTC online business over 100% over the last 12 months. -
