Sponsor: The North FaceProject Details: Many materials have the potential to release microfibers; apparel from natural and synthetic fabrics, home textiles like carpets and furniture, or even tires, among others. These microfibers can have serious environmental consequences. The goal of this project is to create a sustainable fabric that meets the performance and comfort criteria of TNF’s top fleece programs (using recycled or virgin polyester) that releases the least amount of microfibers during the product's lifecycle. The student team will identify and analyze various yarn and fabric constructions for multiple fleece fabrics, which will include identifying testing strategies that are predictive of microfiber shedding.

I acquired these skills through my summer project researching various flame retardant chemicals resistance to burning compared to inherently flame resistant fabrics. The goal of the project was to achieve similar or increased results during testing when FR chemicals were applied to inherently non-FR fabric.Gained skills in dyeing and testing the shade of fabrics for correct color matching.
