Having graduated with a 2:1 in a Royal Society of Biology accredited degree in Zoology at Liverpool John Moores University I am now looking for laboratory based industry work within Liverpool. During my degree I chose modules that focused on biomedical aspects and involved laboratory work, such as ‘Genes and Genomes’ and ‘Applications of Genetics in Health and Disease’. Throughout my degree I was required to use scientific equipment, such as scientific pipettes and centrifuges whilst also using scientific microscopes and occasionally biological equipment when performing PCR and gel electrophoresis. My degree also allowed me to assess scientific data and produce my findings in the form of a scientific report, using statistical software. It was also essential within my degree to follow COSHH assessments when performing any practical work, whether that was in the laboratory or during fieldwork. I am now eager to further develop and attain new laboratory skills within a professional laboratory environment. I am currently working as a Science Technician within a school based in Liverpool under a temporary contract with Tradewind Recruitment agency. This role involves setting up practical experiments for teachers, as well as stock management and communicating with teaching staff over various experiments or any other queries. I am also expected to maintain and monitor practical equipment whether that be checking for any faults or damage or general maintenance. Additionally, this role also involves handling and correctly disposing of any hazardous materials or chemicals by following the correct guidelines set by CLEAPSS, as well as preparing any simple solutions. This role also requires teamwork through working within the science department alongside another technician as well as teaching staff, allowing myself the opportunity to ask any questions or help when needed. It also required me to learn quickly in order to work independently, ensuring that teaching staff can provide practicals when required so that students receive the highest quality of learning within their lessons. I also performed general housekeeping duties, such as cleaning glassware after experiments and ensuring the prep room was organised.
