About Sam Dehaeck
Researcher specialised in optical diagnostics in fluids and machine vision. I have proficient experience with fluid velocity measurements, metrology (micro-bubble and droplet sizing) and temperature/density measurements. This work has also given me a good understanding of (macro-)photography and general optics. Next to this, I also have a strong interest in image processing and have written numerous GUI programs to analyse the obtained images.Specialties: PIV, LDV, ILIDS, Backlighting, GPVS, Schlieren, Interferometry, C#, Java & Python
Listed skills include Fluid Dynamics, Optics, Image Processing, Python, and 10 others.

Research Engineer
I am in charge of setting up a complete optical lab in order to investigate experimentally the evaporation of binary mixtures (water-ethanol) and the accompanying instabilities (Rayleigh-Taylor and Marangoni). To this end, I have configured a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a Schlieren/shadowgraphy set-up. In addition, a gui program was written to extract the relevant concentration and temperature gradients in the fluid.Next to this, I also supervise several PhD's working e.g. on the absorption of CO2 in a carbonate/bicarbonate mixture.
Phd-Student
My PhD was part of the Mutech-project in which, amongst others, the effect of air bubbles on electochemical reactions was studied. To measure these micro-bubbles, five optical measuring techniques were investigated / newly developed for measuring their diameter and location (Backlighting, Glare Point Velocimetry and Sizing, Interferometric Particle Imaging, Glare Circles and Laser Marked Shadowgraphy). Next to a theoretical raytracing program, several image processing algorithms were also written to aid in camera calibration, ellipse detection and interference pattern analysis.
Diploma Course Student
Specialisation year in experimental Fluid Mechanics. Research project dealt with measuring the size and location of argon bubbles that were injected during the continuous casting of steel. This work was awarded the 'Excellence in Experimental Research' award from the VKI.
