Southern Ocean

After upgrading my qualifications at Beauty Point in Tasmania, I worked full-time with Petuna Sealord. During this time I worked 6 weeks on, 6 weeks off as Engineer. My role involved every aspect of the upkeep, maintenance and service and repairs of the FV Petuna Endeavour. I was responsible not only for the hands on service & maintenance of this 25m vessel, but also maintaining logs in relation to the quantity of various materials on board & placing orders before such items ran out.

I enjoyed working on a casual basis for Wahoo Charters during slow months while with Tas Bluefin, as skipper of Skybird 3, the largest deep-sea fishing boat on the Gold Coast. This involved ferrying up to 21 tourists and locals anywhere up to 20-mile offshore with up to 3 crew to target both bottom / reef fish as well as surface species including large Marlin & Tuna.

After a long history with the company, I returned primarily to skipper FV Ocean Explora during many charters with scientists from the Australian Antarctic Division and also observers from Australian Fisheries Management Authority. As part of a research assignment we were collecting data using Time Depth Recorders in an attempt to help reform legislation in relation to safe fishing practices for Sea Birds around the world. After the experiments were complete, Graham Robertson, from the Australian Antarctic Division received a grant to develop a device for releasing the long-line baits under water to prevent hooking Sea Birds. I remained the primary skipper during the following trials which lasted 12 months refining and perfecting the device. I was directly involved in the fine-tuning of the device which is now being used successfully around the world. During my last 12 months targeting export quality fish with TAS Bluefin, I skippered FV OCEAN DAWN during the peak moon-phase, and during the dark of the moon I usually assisted other vessels that were having any difficulties catching. I specialised in determining what aspect of the fishing operation was affecting the catch rate and had an excellent success rate in finding the remedy. Show less

My Parents owned Hadleys which was one of the State's largest Hotels and still is. My Aunt & Uncle owned Newland House which specialised in Wedding Receptions and is still located in Hobart.
