Profile bio

About Sam Duffin Mapp

I'm a Positive Psychology practitioner, coach and forest bathing guide, with a mission to help people and teams feel as good about themselves as they can, and it all came about because of this....Where I've been:Twenty years ago I hit rock bottom after a decline into addiction and extreme loneliness. This threw me into the arms of recovery and positive psychology; a philosophy and practice I've lived ever since. Then moving out of London, I started hanging out in forests and became captivated by the healing power of nature. Finally, it was the mirror my neurodiverse kids held up to me that so clearly explained the riddle of my own challenges.Where it led to:I have a Distinction for a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology, and have completed further coaching and mindfulness courses. I became a certified forest bathing guide and have taken more than 1000 NHS staff forest bathing. I have been a Health & Wellbeing Coach for the NHS and am very close to becoming an ACC ICF accredited NLP Life Coach, combining these methods with motivational interviewing, Imagework and Solution Focussed coaching. What I learned along the way:It's the stressful go-go-go lifestyle that hinders us. So many of us are constantly striving, so much so that we're not aware of how far we've already come. It's this stress on the nervous system which impacts physical and mental health and drains our cognition, which is why slowing down is so important; slow down, take stock, appreciate what's happening now, get some balance back, and then with clarity, a level head and much more self-compassion, move forward with the good work of flourishing. What I can do to help you to flourish:COACHING - I coach individuals whose lives have been impacted by mental or physical health challenges, addiction or neurodiversity, helping them to de-stress to find clarity, direction and purpose, along with the self-belief to create flourishing lives.WORKSHOPS - I design and deliver impactful and engaging interactive workshops based on the science of Positive Psychology, helping staff to calm their nervous systems to increase their likelihood of flourishing through enhanced wellbeing and resilience.AWAY-DAYS - I create and facilitate alternative and inclusive away-days and strategic off-sites which include forest bathing, nutrition and creative sessions. Team days are designed to enhance reconnection, wellbeing and nature connection. Strategic off-sites are designed to rejuvenate cognition and promote creativity, free-thinking and empathy; perfect for finding the perfect solution.

Lead Facilitator And Forest Bathing Guide

Current

Shoreham, Kent

As part of a hosting team, I co-facilitate this funded day retreat for public sector workers - Teachers, NHS staff and Social Care. Having taken over 1000 people forest bathing, I have proven record of converting many skeptics to the healing power of nature! As a hosting team of four we work seamlessly together, and have a lot of fun doing so. It is our relaxed and jovial, yet alert and on-the-ball approach, together with our sense of ease and comfort with each other, which sets the tone for the day. I either take on the role of lead facilitator or forest bathing guide. We continue to received 100% feedback when asked on the feedback form if participants would recommend this retreat to colleagues, and due to the evidence of the positive impact of the retreat, Out in the Field continues to be awarded funding for further retreats. As a member of the original core team, I am therefore personally partly responsible for this success and impact, which is the pinnacle of my career to date, and something I am deeply proud of.

Coaching Lead

Liphook, England, United Kingdom

Using the Wheel of Life to build rapport and identify areas of focus, I coached the students using a person centred approach, on many issues such as positive behaviour change, to improve confidence, reduce anxiety, to counter perfectionism, quit vaping, and manage emotions. Many of the students I coached were neurodiverse, and I helped them to design strategies to improve their organisation, focus and attention and to enhance their impulses control. As much as possible, I would coach outdoors, using nature and calming techniques to help anxious students sooth their nervous systems, helping them to become more resourceful and in control.I created and facilitated psychoeduational workshops, such as building resilience, overcoming exam anxiety and befriending your inner critic. With a passion for reducing stigma and increasing awareness, I arranged year group 12 Step recovery talks with local Alcoholic Anonymous groups.

Coaching people age 18+ in person and online, I used motivational interviewing, health coaching, positive psychology, solution focussed coaching and the principles of acceptance and commitment therapy, to successfully assist them to generate the motivation to achieve positive lifestyle changes and improve low to moderate mental health. Examples of coaching outcomes achieved with patients:โ€ข no longer requiring an operation because of healthy lifestyle changes โ€ข overcoming hopelessness and an existential crisis by generating hope and optimism for the future, facilitated by finding fulfilment in newly acquired volunteering roles โ€ข reconnection to an old friend and reengaging in outdoor fitness after having experienced debilitating social anxiety resulting from lockdownWithin this role I created wellbeing and resilience workshops that I delivered to community groups, on occasions receiving applause, and I triaged and signposted patients to other services, both within and outside of the NHS.

Founder

True Nature Connect

Farnham, England, United Kingdom

I founded this business in lockdown, aiming to reconnect people to each other after Covid, and back to themselves and to nature, using nature connection, coaching and positive psychology. I ran inspirational, hope-enhancing and motivational wellbeing courses and drop-in workshops, all which took place as I guided groups through the forest. This experience provided invaluable learning and gave me the opportunity to join business entrepreneur groups, to network and expand my knowledge of business and marketing. Apr 2021 - Nov 2022

Associate Trainer

Uk

The founder, Heather Beach, was a peer on my Masters, and employed me as a trainer shortly after seeing me present, saying I was better than some of her best trainers, and describing me as being hugely charismatic, having training in my blood and having something that no one can teach. In my engaging, relatable, down-to-earth and suitably impassioned style, I delivered mental health and wellbeing training in-person to large groups of employees in the corporate sector. I also created and delivered a well-received half day resilience workshop, which considered different learning styles and included opportunities for group work, movement, fun and playfulness and team bonding.

Oct 2019 - Mar 2020

Trainer And Facilitator

Surrey, England, United Kingdom

I volunteered in this role, delivering Wellbeing Ambassador training to primary and secondary school pupils, teaching The 5 Ways to Wellbeing and facilitating smaller group sessions. The challenge here was to pitch my training style to the different developmental stages of the groups, which I succeeded at because they engaged and interacted with the session, and the feedback I received from staff was always positive. I collected and collated feedback for stakeholder reports. I also co-facilitated an anger management course in a secondary school, which taught me skills around working with disengaged students, most of whom were experiencing poor mental health, and dealing with challenging behaviour. This was an eye-opening opportunity that enhanced my innate ability to empathise and be with this cohort in an approachable and relatable manner.

Oct 2017 - Jul 2018

Volunteer Teaching Assitant

Farnham, Surrey

At the start of my explorations into a new career, I envisioned becoming a dyslexia tutor, so in 2016 I completed the first stage of this learning journey; a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Supporting Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties course, which required me to volunteer in a primary school. I enjoyed working with the children and watching the progress that resulted from our 1-2-1 sessions, however due to my big-picture thinking, a benefit of my own dyslexia, I decided to widen the focus of my career to mental health and wellbeing.

Sep 2016 - Jul 2017

Registered Childminder

Healthy Happy Safe

Farnham, England, United Kingdom

During maternity leave I created my own business so that I could earn as I raised my young family. Being a childminder required creativity, patience, and exceptional administrative skills, as there were many Ofsted guidelines and protocols to follow. I had to compile ongoing Learning Journeys for each child, create policies and procedures and undertake safeguarding training, as well as my own marketing and accounting.

Lettings Manager

Sherton Law

London, England, United Kingdom

Due to my interpersonal skills, strong sales ability, and being a liked and respected, effective and efficient team player, I grew Sheraton Law from one to two offices, both of which I managed. During busy periods we let several properties a day, which required fastidious organisation and attention to detail. The role was very fast paced so required the ability to think-on-your-feet whilst working well under pressure. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills were essential as the role involved dealing with multiple stakeholders. It was a lucrative, busy, people orientated role, inwhich I thrived. Key accomplishments were; growing the business by successfully pitching to let and manage the portfolio of a London wide property investment company, achieved using skills gained whilst working in Business Development in advertising; retaining long-term clients in a highly competitive market; successfully managing a growing team.
