I have recently completed a Bioengineering MSc Course at Nottingham University. Prior to this course I studied Mechanical engineering at Loughborough University. I became particularly interested in continuing to the postgraduate course following my final project; this focused on the CFD modelling for an alternative method of ventilating patients, known as High Frequency Jet Ventilation.The MSc at Nottingham provided an eye opening and challenging insight into the world of medical engineering. During the course, a variety of areas were covered ranging from biological aspects such as cell material interactions and tissue engineering through to biomechanics of cardiovascular and hard tissue implants. Regulation of the medical device industry and its certification were also focused upon which highlighted its importance in such a critical care industry. My MSc final project was based on the development of a novel surgical tool to aid in the safe closure of Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomies. This is commonly regarded as a high-risk procedure sometimes used during corrective scoliotic operations. This project was challenging and I had to draw on attributes such as time and inter-personal management, alongside practical skills including CAD/CAM design programmes, as well as machining and manufacturing the final prototype. The prototype was essentially made from carbon fibre, which needed specialist knowledge and manufacturing techniques. The project was such a success there was a progression into securing intellectual property rights over the design, functionality and unique manufacturing processes.Over the past decades, there have been many ground-breaking advances in medical technology. Personally I feel we have just scratched the surface and I look forward to being part of what is to come over the span of my professional career.
