Sam Garland has always been drawn to the world of science fiction. His interest in armored astronauts, starships, killer robots, and the infinite depths of space have led him to his career in illustration. Sam recently received his MFA in illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He has worked and traveled all over the world, bringing comic books to life. He is breaking new ground in the field of motion comics and interactive illustrations and is at his best when creating science fiction. Sam is the principle illustrator and co-founder of the Sequential Imagery Consortium, based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

• Maintains expense records, organizes budgets, and processes invoices, goods receipts, and purchase orders for the Learning & Development Department.• Reviews and summarizes reports and documents, prepare presentation material, maintains calendars, makes reservations, and facilitates communications for department director. • Handles sensitive/confidential information, greets and escorts visitors, answers incoming calls and connects clients to appropriate staff, and provides high-quality, professional representation for the organization.• Completes and tracks monthly activities, developing and organizing databases and filing systems.

• Provide customer service to current and prospective students, parents, and University staff.• Manage student files, including conducting regular audits.• Oversee calendars for Director and Associate Director and scheduling appointments.• Manage the Department’s communications by responding to inquiries, explaining policies and procedures, and referring students to appropriate campus resources.• Assist in outreach to our students via telephone, email, open house events, and social networking.

• Provided on-site geotechnical consultation and monitoring services, representing the company in client relations.• Operated soil analysis laboratory, classified construction materials for appropriate uses, and used field nuclear densometers for soil qualification.• Updated maps and blueprints, wrote technical field reports, and maintained detailed data records for employer and client use.• Supervised construction crews during placement and compaction of building materials, such as local and prepared soils, asphalt, and concrete.

• Support Assistant Director teaching Clothed Figure Drawing classes.• Engage students and provide demonstrations, feedback, critiques, and suggestions.• Organize and lead group meetings for AAU’s Comic Book Club, and Illustration Club.• Create workshops concerning costumed models, 24-Hour Comics, and digital production.

• Taught a series of environmental education classes, for undergraduate to post-graduate level students, at Northwest Normal University, Lanzhou, People’s Republic of China.• Met community needs for environmental protection, geotechnical consulting, and education improvement.• Provided cultural exchange and language education for local residents, students, and teachers in classroom and private settings within the community.• Facilitated technology development through computer software and hardware demonstrations, introduced new ideas and encouraged creativity.
