During the summer of 2015, my research focused on the selective inhibition of MMP (matrix metalloproteinases, specifically MMP 7 and MMP 16) through the use of zinc binding groups and metal substitution. The ultimate goal was to synthesize zinc binding groups that result in optimal binding activity, effectively inhibiting the MMP.For the Fall of 2015 semester, my research focused on investigating NIH funding.For the Spring 2016 semester, I focused on the following projects:-Continued looking into funding discrepancies and fixing the NIH budget crisis-Looked to obtain crystal structures of MMP-16 bound to a zinc binding group inhibitorFor the summer of 2016, I was a Hughes Intern looking at the kinetics of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9).For the 2016-2017 school year, I worked on the overexpression, purification, and kinetic characterization of matrix metalloproteinase 12 (MMP-12)
