Astoria Energy LLC is an independent power producer operating two 550 MW combined cycle gas powered plants supplying 18% of New York City's power. While interning for Astoria, my goal was to learn as much about the power markets and energy industry as I could. Among other assignments, the most educational ones I undertook during the internship were creating and presenting a report on heat rate comparisons of Astoria to other Zone J power suppliers, reading and discussing the company's credit agreement with the CFO and CEO, and meeting the company's lenders from their most recent financing. Additionally, I worked with the director of risk management on a project analyzing present and historical data on gas consumption efficiency, for the purpose of optimizing plant performance. Through the various projects I undertook, discussions with the management team and lenders, and tours of the physical plants, this internship gave me a base knowledge of how the power generation industry functions from a private sector perspective, and the different factors involved in project finance.

The Johns Manville plant in Edison NJ produces plastic coating for insulation in houses, and has a sales-team and distribution network present throughout the east coast. As intern at Johns Manville for the plant manager, my responsibilities were first to create a permanent exhibition explaining the underlying polymer chemistry behind how the plant functions, and second to give a ten minute speech at the company’s annual sales meeting explaining the process the polymers go through. The purpose of my work was to provide the sales team with a deeper understanding of what they were selling, and to connect the academic theory with the real world product. My speech garnered very positive reviews and the exhibition is still there to this day. The most influential aspect of the internship for me were the various discussions and debates I had with the plant manager on real world topics. He has become a mentor to me, and those discussions introduced me to problem solving outside of academics.
