About Sam Cassidy

When I tell people I am a dietitian I am met with 1 of 3 responses; "are you going to tell me to eat more veggies?", "can you help me get fit?" or the most common answer, a short silence and scrunched up face riddled with confusion. While this may just be an ice-breaker gone wrong, I believe that this presents the perfect opportunity to redefine what dietetics really means. So what does dietetics mean to me? I don't believe it's about telling people general information on what to eat, and it's certainly not about turning everyone into athletes. To me, dietetics is understanding the role food plays in our lives and how it can be used to promote health, manage disease and maximise our quality of life.I am captivated by the emerging literature and strive to provide evidence-based practice on how to optimise health and wellbeing and effectively manage diseases through dietary changes. I understand the complexity of our healthcare system and respect each profession involved and their role in providing complete care. As such, I enjoy working collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team that promotes achievable patient outcomes. I value adaptability when it comes to patient management, taking a person-centred approach that accommodates individual circumstances and building rapport and relationships to understand what strategies can best support the individual.
