I lead Environmental Geography teaching for undergraduate students

My DPhil research examined energy and environmental policy targeted at Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the UK. The project used in-depth, ethnographic accounts of influential actors and their practices at multiple levels. For policy makers, implementers and evaluators, it uses practice theory as a framework for understanding the complexities of designing, managing and assessing energy efficiency programmes. As SMEs are most likely to receive business advice from ‘middle actors’ such as accountants and advisors, the project sought to understand how they perceive themselves as brokers of advice, and how policy might be designed to better equip them with information on energy. It looked in depth at the everyday working practices of SMEs and their employees; how energy is consumed, conserved and managed, and how decision making relating to efficiency investments are made. The Emerging Leaders in Environmental and Energy Policy Network (ELEEP) is a joint project of the Ecologic Institute and the Atlantic Council. Launched in 2011, ELEEP is a dynamic, membership-only forum for the exchange of ideas, policy solutions, best-practices and professional development for early and mid-career North American and European leaders working on environmental and energy issues.I have attended two study tours with ELEEP. In 2015 we visited Copenhagen and Berlin to learn about the Danish and German energy transitions, including visits to an offshore wind farm, waste incineration and district heating plant, a open-cast coal mine and a CHP power station. In 2016 we visited Iceland, meeting with a major fishery corporation and Iceland's biggest bank to hear how it was addressing corporate social responsibility since the crash of 2008. As team leader, I oversaw three European Regional Development Funded projects targeted at helping SMEs to reduce their carbon emissions:Sustainable Routes - offering grants for SMEs to cut down on business travelLow Carbon Workspaces - energy efficiency grantsGrants for Eco Innovation - supporting low carbon businesses to growI also managed other local business support projects, encouraging job creation and greater use of ICT amongst small businesses.

Sustainable Routes offers grants to SMEs to encourage sustainable transport choices. The project is worth over £2.6m and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, overseen by the Department for Communities and Local Government. Project management responsibilities include application assessments, claim retrievals, project promotion and handling regular audits. www.sustainableroutes.co.uk

ecoVeritas are an Oxford based team of environmental and sustainability consultants. I managed various packaging waste projects, working for clients such as Astra Zeneca and Amazon to ensure they were compliant with the EU Packaging Waste Directive. Responsibilities also included company strategy and business development. I wrote a proposal for the company's first government funded project, involving 9 major supermarkets collaborating on packaging best practice.

Whilst working at ecoVeritas in 2013, I also conducted two independent carbon footprints and energy assessments, for Thorpe Hall School in Essex and Restore, an Oxford based charity.

Best Foot Forward (now part of the Anthesis Group) are a leading sustainability consultancy, advising corporations and governments on sustainability strategy and carbon reduction programmes. They were pioneers in developing ecological footprinting methodologies, and carried out analyses of the London Olympics, as well as footprints of entire product portfolios for leading supermarkets.As a consultant and project manager, I led teams on the following projects: - Developing a mobile website for L’Oreal subsidiary Pureology, encouraging water savings in salons - Tailoring our bespoke software to allow carbon footprint assessments of major funding applications for the Heritage Lottery Fund- Achieving the Carbon Trust Standard for a range of central heating system cleaning products for FernoxI also worked on a large project for WRAP’s Product Sustainability Forum, a collaboration of UK brandsAt Best Foot Forward I worked closely with the technical team on knowledge management, building the company wiki, and was a super-user of Footprinter, BBF’s flagship software.

I joined ecoVeritas out of university as a data analyst, working on large compliance projects for clients such as John Lewis. I was responsible for quality assurance on large databases of products, and for using the company's statistical software to produce calculations for compliance.I became a Consultant, managing key accounts such as Waitrose and New Look, and as lead bid writer, contributed to average company growth of 20% over 4 years.Whilst at ecoVeritas, I managed a project for the Norwegian state pension fund (the largest in the world), monitoring over 2000 businesses in China for ethical behaviour indicators. Monitoring hundreds of news sites in a range of languages for issues such as child labour, pollution and corruption, I managed a team of multi-linguists and data analysts.

At LSE, I worked with Professor Yvonne Rydin on a project looking at Sustainable Construction and Planning practices in London. The project also examined the use of ecological footprinting techniques in the construction sector.
