Synthetic Polymer/Organic Chemist
Sr. R&D Chemist
Chemist
Graduate Student Researcher
In the Dichtel group, I have designed, synthesized, and characterized substituted aromatic architectures. My specific role was to develop synthetic targets where an elegant benzanulation reaction could be employed. With this goal in mind, I have investigated graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and linear conjugated aromatic polymers. During this work, I have acquired expertise in the characterization of graphitic materials via mass spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and a variety of other spectroscopic techniques. Other additional skills I have mastered include air-free schlenk line and glove box techniques as well as traditional synthetic organic techniques to study small molecule compounds and monomers.
Summer Research Intern
I worked with Professor Liming Dai on synthesizing anisotropic gold nanorods, in order to broaden the absorption range of organic photovoltaic devices to match the solar spectrum. I synthesized gold nanorods by treating 4 nm Au nanoparticles with HAuCl4, AgNO3, ascorbic acid, and a surfactant. I characterized the nanorods through UV-Vis spectroscopy and correlated λmax to their size as measured by light scattering. I then incorporated these materials into photovoltaic devices and tested their performance.
Summer Research Intern
I synthesized diblock copolymers that were expected to exhibit high proton conductivity for fuel cell membranes. Professor Savin and I selected perfluoropoly(propylene oxide) (PFPO) as the inert matrix and polystyrene (PS) as a model second block to characterize the phase-separation behavior of this combination for the first time. This experience introduced me to many polymer characterization techniques, including dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy.
