I started life as an accountant. My excuse is that is was the first job I saw that wasn't in Lincolnshire! 10 years later they invented computers that worked.I did the traditional TOPS course in COBOL programming and completed it top of the class. As I had just become a father and bought a new house, I needed a new job.My first day at T&ACS I was greeted by Olivetti manuals in Italian and a programming language, PLZ, never heard of before or since. This should have warned me what a life in IT was going to be.I then moved into the world of c, unix, vi and insurance. Green screens and bundles of cables. Micro computers with the fraction of the processing power of my current phone. T&ACS turned into Saracen Systems Ltd thanks to a Norwegian shipping company. Two men in an office with chandeliers and a garden. Then Bill invented computers, or so it seems. We went out and bought a second PC as it was hard to demonstrate the benefits of networking with only one. Saracen became part of Bradstock. Development moved from c to VB via FoxPro, Lotus, and lots of others that came and went. Access changed the game and became a go-to when rapid development was needed. SQL Server and Access became the bigger game.Then Tim and friends invented the Internet.The MD (CEO Hadn't been invented yet) came in with a competitors business card, pointed and said "What's that?" Email had arrived. Nobody I knew had one. Last year over 20,000 emails went through my account.Bradstock turns into Alexander Forbes (mostly). Alexander Forbes turns into Lockton. Web sites became the rage. Now I'm sitting typing into a thing the size of a skinny book with no wires and these words are visible to you all. The changes in my working life have been phenomenal. What happens next?Bigger, better, faster. That's what hooked me into IT and the continual challenge is why I 'm still here!Someone is asking for an app. They're not sure what that is but need it now. Have to go write one!
