Principal EC&I Engineer Principal EC&I / Functional Safety Engineer for PROjEN House in Chester, I was responsible for the delivery of EC&I and functional safety management and design for large projects around the UK. I managed a large team of engineers to deliver electrical and instrument detailed design packages for a £100million project. My team also managed the full functional safety lifecycle for the client.Other projects included:Validated SIS instrument loops on a fine chemical hydrogen plant and compiled verified all the relevant lifecycle documentation and prepared the safety files for an independent stage 3 Functional Safety Assessment.Responsible for the detailed design, installation and commissioning activities for a new pharmaceutical plant this included Hazardous areas and SIL equipment.Liaison and interaction with a multi discipline engineering team on a wide variety of EPC projects I was responsible for all areas of design including cable block drawings, loops, schematics, Instrument, cable and termination schedules, cause and effect matrix, trip and alarm procedures, creating I.S. Descriptive System Documents, commissioning documentation and installation scope of works. Generation of instrument data sheets and selection of equipment to meet ATEX and SIL requirementsRepresented the client by attending Factory Acceptance Tests and Site Acceptance Tests for both hardware and software applications.I was also responsible for commissioning of electrical equipment and instrumentation then producing both instrument commissioning sheets and handover certificates to the client.

Lead EC&I Engineer on a number of large projects these include, Reinstated a redundant chemical production plant that had been neglected of over 7 years, this included installing new Hazardous Area equipment for Gas zones 1,2 & 3, new trip instrumentation which conforms with IEC 61508/61511, removal of redundant equipment and introduce new equipment & technologies to site to improve operation, make the process safer or increase product quality.Expanded an existing Emerson Delta V DCS system to provide a new batch makeup system on an existing plant, this project included new DCS control cabinets, instrumentation and electrical control gear.As part of my EC&I I was responsible for the following:• Attended Hazard studies 1,2 & 3, Process Hazards Reviews and LOPA assessments, as the EC&I specialist.• Worked as part of a multi discipline design team producing complete detailed design packages.• Produced budget and detailed cost estimates for implementing projects, materials and installation estimates within 10%• Planned projects to minimize plant down time, interface with shift leaders and plant managers to coordinate work around production plans including regularly attended project progress meetings, client liaison and progress reporting.• Provided E&I construction supervision of installations and Instruction and training provided to I/E project and maintenance technicians for new equipment. Carry out safety, risk assessments, and attend kick off meetings with contactors• Commission I/E installations and software modifications and hand back to production team, Produce handover documentation such as commissioning sheets, as-built loop Diagrams, ATEX inspections etc.

A core member of the project team, the team was tasked to delivered a multimillion pound chemical project, I was chosen to represent the client to ensure all equipment was compliant to site standards equipment was common to site and the installation was easy to maintain and helped integrate the plant into the existing site.The project was to remove and refurbish all plant equipment and reinstall it in our factory. The existing equipment needed major refurbishment and modifications to bring it in line with current legislations and site standard.My main duties Included:• Design, commissioning and maintenance activities throughout the project lifecycle.• Worked with the design engineers to deliver a facility that has reduced maintenance and life cycle costs, this included ensuring equipment purchased met the site standards, ensuring equipment was common to site and the installation was easy to maintain. • Provided technical expertise and training to fellow technicians and operations staff in diagnosing plant problems and plant operation.• Worked with project engineers to modify the plant after it was installed to maximize production, operability, reliability and safety issues around the new plant. • Performed Factory acceptance tests (FAT) on all equipment including SCADA interface panels, package equipment such as calciners, dryers and powder handling equipment.• Wrote trip test methods for equipment to aid technicians to perform proof tests, I standardize the procedures and ensured the results were accrete and recorded correctly. The proof test was designed to highlight any dangerous failures of safety critical equipment.• Configuration / modifications to DCS control and PLC systems across site.

Carrying out electrical / instrumentation maintenance and improvement tasks on a wide range of equipment such as: DCS and PLC systems including Delta V, Yokogawa and Mitsubishi PLC’s, Hazardous area equipment, control panels, MCCs, VSDs, and wide range of instruments in all different applications.Create and perform trip test routines according to manufactures design trip settings on a wide range of equipment including, furnaces, calciners, boilers using both hard-wired and software trips and interlocks.Create and maintain plant-engineering records to support maintenance activities and monitor asset performance, identifying and taking action on trends where improvements can be made.Carry out predictive maintenance surveys, such as vibration monitoring and thermography, creating a comprehensive database using Emonitor Odyssey Software to analyze results and evaluate trends, identify and ensure timely corrective actions are taken to prevent SHE incidents and maximize plant availability.

One year off the job training at training 2000, this provided basic general engineering skills and gained an NVQ level 2 in Engineering Manufacturing. The rest of my apprentice was at ICI Synetix (Now Johnson Matthey Catalysts). Here I was given more in-depth training in electrical and instrument maintenance by fellow work colleagues on all kinds of equipment, as well as working towards my NVQ level 3 in Engineering Maintenance.Spent 4 Years Day release academic training at Blackburn College where I gained my ONC and HNC in Electrical Electronic Engineering.
