    Placement #7 (final) of rotation through City of Sydney engineering teams as part of UNSW Co-op ScholarshipProjects • Co-managing the day to day running of a two 7 man construction crews I supported the project coordinator who coordinated the works programme of small civil works (drainage, footway renewal) for the construction crews. I learnt about the importance of building good relationships with staff and quick decision making. • Created unique project management software for Construction department The Construction Crew previous had a laborious and inaccurate project management system. I created a all-in-one software in Excel that automatically tracks budget vs. actual durations and costs, predicts overruns, manages money flow and reports on key performance parameters. This software has the potential to significantly reduce project administration time. Takeaways • Responsibility, project ownership The administration management software project was the first time I had come up with my own idea and been able to work self-directed. Having to set my own quality standards and deadlines was challenging but I learnt a lot from it. • Better understanding of ‘constructability’ issues Getting out of site a couple of times a week meant that I got to further appreciate the difference between what seems appropriate on a plan and what is appropriate on site. I hope to take this awareness with me into the future. • Traffic Control, site requirements, work health and safety, Appreciation of why these protocols are important and how they are implemented on site.

    Placement #6 of rotation through City of Sydney engineering teams as part of UNSW Co-op Scholarship.Projects • Strategic review into measuring walking I looked into the feasibility of basing the Sydney strategic review off a landmark study done by the Transport for London department (http://bit.ly/1pGQ2oP). • Review of DA applicants from transport perspective Reviewed traffic impact assessments for projects as varied as small 2 storey developments through to multi-level basements for 700 units. • Green Square Light Rail Feasibility: utility location documentation Mapped out the approximate location of all utilities within a 30m radius of the proposed light rail route using Autocad software. Takeaways • Understanding the Sydney Local Environmental and Development Control plans in more detail Building more detailed knowledge of standards used in traffic impact assessments. If a development applicant proposed to do something not in line with the standards I had to have enough background knowledge to make a judgement of whether it was a reasonable modification. • Change making requires a multidisciplinary approach A division of the City Access team was tasked with increasing the cycling participation rates in the Sydney LGA. The theory of change for cycling participation is extremely complex and it is hard to know how all the moving parts in the system will respond to a change to policy or infrastructure. I have come to have the opinion that having multidisciplinary knowledge will translate to better decision making that will increase the likelihood of the change having a net positive impact. • Introduction to LGA scale transport strategy Awareness of the multitude of transport management measures that are used to manage demand and flow as a result of reviewing the Green Square Transport Management and Access Plan (TMAP) in personal time.

This includes review of original conceptual proposal, construction drawings and works-as-executed documentation. Takeaways • Introduction to planning legislation First time exposure to the Sydney Local Environmental Control Plan 2012 and Sydney Development Control Plan 2012 and how they frame all development in the City of Sydney LGA. Nothing in the LGA can be built without consideration of impacts to stormwater, waste management, privacy, social cohesion, overshadowing and a multitude of other considerations. This was a deeply perspective changing realisation for me. • How to project manage For most of my life I have struggled with time management and prioritisation. In this team I received some fantastic practical tips on how to improve in these areas (email and folder structuring, action lists, etc) • Negotiation skills with developers and internal stakeholders Learnt from how staff tactfully discussed application issues with developers.

Takeaways • Base level knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic modelling and flood risk management principles Introduction to the importance of local government floodplain risk management policy in protecting development from flooding. • Fundamentals of asset maintenance Learnt about how to characterise asset condition (serviceability and strength) in order to prioritise work and predict budget needed in future.

Projects • Design of raised thresholds, kerb extensions, traffic signal changes, kerb The variety of projects I worked on meant that I had to commit to memory a wide repertoire of standards and consult specialists across the City of Sydney organisation (heritage specialists, aborists, stonemasons, etc). Takeaways • Knowledge acquisition and greater understanding of relevant Australian, NSW and City of Sydney design standards Understanding of technical specifications for a number of different assets including kerb and gutter, footways, roadways, street furniture, street lighting and stormwater drainage. • 25 weeks experience with Autocad Map, Civil 3D softwares Having computer literacy with these programs is a highly transferable skill as they are used by almost every design consultancy. • Introduction to design thinking This placement introduced me to the perspective that everything in the built environment has been meticulously designed. • Importance of attention to detail My baseline approach to problem solving is a ‘quick and dirty’ mentality predicated on the belief that you 80% of the results in 20% of the total time spent working on a problem. In Design, being 80% right isn’t good enough – you can’t just conform to a standard 80% of the time. The Design team shifted my perspective to value in-depth analysis.

I worked on proposals involving the installation of car-share parking and kerb widening for traffic calming. Takeaways • Community consultation process, development of customer liaison skills Traffic management is the area of municipal engineering that tends to spark the most public emotion. Working in the team required me to develop my communication skills to be able to clearly and courteously engage in challenging conversations. It taught me to analyse what intrinsic assumptions I am making in my communication and how what I think I am saying may not sound the same to a recipient who comes from a different place of knowledge. • Introduction to policies and design codes that govern traffic management in the City of Sydney and NSW more broadly This team gave me a base level understanding of the theory that underpins fundamental regulatory structures like road geometry, signage and permit approvals. Exact policies and design codes will vary across Australia and the world, but understanding the fundamental theory gives me a working knowledge to draw on in the future.

    Placement 1 of rotation through CIty of Sydney engineering teams as part of UNSW Co-op Scholarship.Projects • Administration assistant for the Rainbow Crossing project at Taylor Square I worked with key infrastructure managers in the City and Road and Maritime Services to help deliver the Rainbow Crossing (http://bit.ly/1R9eMQt). The project was highly politicized and had a very short turnaround timeframe which made it an exciting project to be involved in straight out of university. I was involved in: a) Gathering and evaluating quotations b) Dealing with media enquiries • Quality and safety checks for small streetscape projects Site visits with supervisor engineer to a variety of different projects. Observation of how to build rapport with site supervisors and also how to reprimand when work is not being done to a high enough standard. Takeaways • Hands on exposure It was good to be seeing how things get built in reality at the start of my career as a lot of designers end up disconnected in ‘design land’. • First exposure to professional work culture Business structures, etiquette, work times and professional teamwork were all new concepts to me and I appreciate getting exposure to them early in my undergraduate degree. • Exposure to political influence on projects From a design and construction perspective, the Rainbow Crossing was a simple project. What made the project so complicated was the fact that the team had to consider the perspectives of all the different stakeholders that this project would impact upon (RMS, City of Sydney ratepayers, local businesses, interest groups, broader public opinion to name a few).
