- Initiated and led project to migrate webview-based content screens to native Jetpack Compose (also implemented native video playback with exoplayer), reducing load times from 4s+ to less than 500ms, boosting app performance for a heavily trafficked part of the application.- Led migration of feature flagging on Android to LaunchDarkly from a legacy internal solution, including rolling out training and guidance to the Android engineering team utilizing an abstraction-based approach for implementation, which reduced coupling with any one flagging solution. Additional targeting functionality allowed minimal risk of new feature launches.- Took ownership of hard technical problems within the app, including: tidying up lifecycle handling to resolve several ‘mystery’ crashes causing a decrease in crash rate by 50% and performing an app-wide audit of memory leaks, resulting in resolving several instances of large views being leaked.- Used spare cycles to enhance telemetry, including pruning excessively noisy events to allow on-call engineers to have a more actionable set of alerts/Sentry issues for analysis, which provided greater prominence to actual app issues.- Transitioned ‘Learn’ pillar of the app from legacy view-based screens with tightly coupled architecture to Compose-based server driven UI utilizing an MVI architecture.- Tidied up OkHttp clients and Picasso instances including adding caching to improve load performance of user-impactful screens such as the homepage.- Provided technical mentorship for mid-level engineers on the team, including code reviews and conducting candidate interviews.
