Sam Johnston Email and Phone Number
I completed my MAI Biomedical Engineering degree in Trinity College Dublin with a First Class Honours with Distinction. I have always had a passion for the biology, physics and mathematics. Therefore, biomedical engineering is the industry for me as it allows me to learn more about the intricacies of the human body and how engineering principles can be applied to understand how it works. This field allows me to expand my knowledge while working with others in ways that one day may benefit the lives of others.I spent a semester on internship in St. James' Hospital where I worked with the staff of Mercer's Institute and the Medical Physics department. We worked on a novel medical device and performed benchmark tests for it. We then teamed up with Intel Movidius to incorporate Computer Vision and Deep Learning into the device's user interface. During the internship I improved many of my skills such as 3D printing and prototyping, coding for computer vision and deep learning. I spent the summer of 2019 working as a research intern and teaching assistant in Trinity's Summer School of Engineering. I got a taster for medical devices as I did preliminary heart valve research which has influenced me to seek this as a career path. I also found a passion for teaching when designing and delivering biomedical engineering-based labs to Leaving Cert students. During the summer I learnt how to print on SLA and FDM 3D printers. In my free time, I enjoy a variety of hobbies. I like to read to expand my knowledge. I enjoy many forms of physical activities from weightlifting/bodybuilding, skiing, hiking and rock climbing. I love photography, I shoot using a DSLR camera and edit my photos on various software.
