Taking a year out from study to spend a year in the engine design department at Royal Enfield was theperfect way to immerse myself in a dynamic design environment and utilise the theory I developed duringuniversity.My role allowed me to work on projects from various teams and collaborate with different members of thecompany often. The diversity in my work allowed me to investigate areas of engineering Ihad not investigated before such as specifying and designing a lubrication system, investigatingendurance failures due to vibration, and the workings behind non-contact sensors.I was also able to dive deep into areas I already had an interest in, such as engine 1D simulation which Icarried out on a 2-cylinder motorbike engine using GT Power, regularly reporting back to the team lead on potential performance increases and which areas should be investigated for dyno testing.In addition to CAD design work with Creo, I also developed practical skills after stripping a few enginesafter testing and conducting tests myself. I carried out flow testing of intake and exhaust componentswhich also consisted of measuring the flow rate, tumble, and swirl coefficients of a cylinder head atdifferent valve lifts.During my time here I gained a new appreciation for the vast number of engineering disciplines that are available to specialise in and I am eager to gain knowledge and experience in new areas.
