Kennards Self Storage is a private family-owned company with 105 locations and employing over 300 people in Australia and New Zealand. The business began in 1973 when the first storage spaces were built by the late Neville Kennard (1937-2012).Joining the company in 1991 when we had just 8 locations, then in 1994 I succeeded my father (Neville) and became CEO. The company had 14 locations at this time. Having worked running storage centres initially, I have also developed skills in property acquisition and development of self storage.KSS acquired its major competitor, Millers Self Storage, in 2004, which more than doubled the size of the business instantly. In 2007, the company entered the New Zealand market, where it now has 9 locations.In 2023, the pipeline of new property development will see 10 new storage centre locations open through to next year. KSS is the largest private owner-operator of self storage in Australasia. The family company wholly-owns the majority of centres under its brand, while also offering self storage management for select investors. The company continues to search for new locations to acquire and develop.The company has broadened its offer to specialist storage including solutions for businesses, wine cellaring, RV's, motorbikes, firearms and safe deposit boxes, as well as box shops.There has been strong attention and focus on the development of organisations culture, to build team engagement, buy-in and deliver great service. This has involved annual surveys using the Organisational Cultural Inventory. These surveys began in 1998, and have been continued each year.
