Dr. Labi is a professor of transportation and infrastructure systems engineering in PurdueUniversity’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering. He also the director of Purdue’s NextGeneration Transportation Systems (NEXTRANS) and associate director of the UniversityTransportation Center for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAT). He received his PhDfrom Purdue University in 2001. He has published over 100 scientific articles in technicaljournals and 2 textbooks used in universities worldwide. His research is guided by current andevolving trends on the landscape of civil infrastructure development, which is increasinglycharacterized by not only emergent threats (aging infrastructure, funding limitations, andinfrastructure vulnerability) but also opportunities (technological advancements andinterdisciplinary synergies). Dr. Labi serves as editorial board member for American Society ofCivil Engineers (ASCE) Journals of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems and theJournal of Infrastructure Systems. He is the chair of ASCE’s committee on planning, economicsand finance, secretary of Transportation Research Board’s committee on asset management, andmember of the ASCE Committees for Advanced Technologies and Infrastructure Systems. Hismajor research awards include the Bryant Mather Award (2007) for best paper in concretematerials awarded by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), ASCE’s FrankMasters Award (2014) for outstanding and innovative work in advancing the area oftransportation systems, and the Transportation Research Board’s K.B. Woods (2008) and D.Grant Mickel (2018) awards for outstanding journal papers in design/construction and operations& maintenance, respectively. In 2014, he was a recipient of an AASHTO award for best highvalue research for a project that investigated the economic impacts of a proposed (andsubsequently enacted) legislation related to highway truck operations.
