On farm we do our best to enhance our soil microbial life to produce healthier and more resilient soils and pastures. Our context of leasing 100% of our land, lacking capital, young families, challenging weather and a lot of learning means progess has been slow and steady. However we are managing to grow good pastures, animals and crops with reduced inputs, reduced environmental losses and some signs of improved soil health and function. Off farm my work has focused on supporting and empowering farmers through innovative learning projects like 'Catch the Rain'. Through Quorum Sense I have designed and implemented dozens of peer-to-peer learning activities since 2019 with a diverse network of biological and regenerative farming pioneers. I have also worked on the edges of the science sector including a mix of applied social research, thought leadership, project leadership and governance. I love working on applied research projects where we create and build connections between people with different perspectives and experiences! My key skills are:- Designing ways to support and empower farmers to evolve their systems and practices.- Biological/ecological/regenerative farming systems.- Integrating diverse perspectives (especially farmers) into science-led projects to increase relevance, improve research design and increase engagement/uptake. - Applying natural and social science to real world challenges. My dream is to find a farm where we can implement a biological/ecological farming system with parallel research projects monitoring the impact of various practices and agroforestry systems on soil health, production, produce quality, environment/climate and profitability. Ideally close to Christchurch...
