I have been a community advocate on the issue of prison issues and lowering recidivism rates for many years. After several discussions with guys getting out of prison I discovered that most just need a basic support system to help them get on their feet. A ride to a job interview, a chance to take some classes, a place to stay that is violence and substance free that treats them with dignity and respect. Guidance in reconnecting positively with society. After much thought I decided to quit my night job and started working on The Canvas, a welcoming community.The concepts are simple, Supportive, Holistic, Integrated, Transition. This means building a supportive community of folks who work together to help an individual transition from prison to community, programing to help heal the body, mind and spirit of the individual, building a network of community opportunities for growth, education, employment and housing so the person transitioning has a better chance of becoming a productive member of society.
