J. Sam Lott formed Automated Mobility Services, LLC in 2017 to continue his career’s work in the field of transportation and automated transport systems. Throughout his 45 year career in this field, he has become internationally known in the application of advanced automation technology. His new work is now focusing on the field of automated/autonomous roadway vehicles (AVs), specifically with respect to how this paradigm shift in automation technology will impact the transit industry. In 2017 he served the Principal Investigator for the Transportation Research Board project titled “Impacts of Regulations and Policies on Connected and Automated Vehicle Technology Introduction in Transit Operations” – NCHRP 20-102(02) while working under the auspices of the Texas Southern University's Center for Transportation Training and Research.During his career, Sam has worked on the creation and updating of several internationally prominent standards for automated transit systems. He was a founding committee member for the ANSI/ASCE-21 Automated People Mover Standard over 25 years ago, and he remains active in this committee that periodically updates this standard. During the period between 2005 and 2009, Sam served as the U.S. representative to the International Electrotechnical Commission working group that developed IEC 62267: Railway Applications, Automated Urban Guided Transport (AUGT) - SafetyRequirements standard.Currently Sam is serving as a special consultant to the Mobility Innovations and Equity Team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Dept. of Energy). He is assisting NREL with developing the concept of Automated Mobility Districts through application of AV technology as transit and ride-sharing fleet services within geographically defined urban districts, major activity centers or campus domains. Over the last 5 years, Sam has published a number of technical papers and made numerous conference presentations, some as a coauthor with Dr. Stan Young of NREL. Of note was the technical paper on the topic of Automated Mobility Districts and Intelligent Roadway Infrastructure that was presented at the 2021 SAE/AUVSI Business of Automated Mobility Forum and subsequently selected by SAE for publishing in the 2022 International Journal of Advances and Current Practices in Mobility. During 2023, Sam has presented and published papers in the proceedings of the ASCE Intl. Conference on Transportation and Development and the ASCE INSPIRE Conference, and he is an invited panelist at the 2023 Podcar City Conference.
