Now retired after 45 years of experience at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the general field of materials properties and performance. Research at NIST has been focused primarily on the properties and testing of metallic materials and products including failure analysis of railroad tank-cars and wheels, mechanical properties of solder, fracture testing of full thickness nuclear reactor pressure vessels, fracture testing of large scale aluminum sheet used in commercial airliners, and fastener testing pertaining to the U.S. Fastener Quality Act. In 1995, became manager of the NIST hardness standardization program. The work includes developing and maintaining the U.S. national primary hardness standards, intercomparisons with other National Metrology Institutes, and the calibration of NIST standard reference materials (SRMs) used by industry to calibrate their hardness testing machines.
