Contemporary deforestation overwhelmingly occurs to produce just a handful of commodities: palm oil; timber, pulp & paper; and Amazonian soybean and beef. My doctoral research critically examined attempts to influence environmental outcomes along supply chains for these 'deforestation commodities'. I found significant limitations - some inevitable, others chosen - in the way businesses, governments and NGOs have sought to influence their connections to deforestation through these supply chains.*Please contact me or see below for a short Executive Summary of my PhD research and findings.*

This project explored the often unfavourable ways that climate, energy and water policy impact on each other. Obvious examples include large-scale afforestation policies in water-scarce Australian basins, or the impacts of fracking on groundwater. My role included profile-raising of the issues and engaging experts and stakeholders. I wrote briefings, attended conferences and made submissions to Australian Parliamentary Committees.

I was responsible for providing impartial policy advice to two Australian Prime Ministers (Howard, 2007; Rudd, 2007-10) on matters of environmental policy, notably including water reform of the Murray-Darling Basin and Australia's anti-whaling policy. I also engaged and advised on domestic energy and climate change policies, including Australia's renewable energy target, as well as heritage matters, such as national park policy and Australia's world heritage listings.
