I am passionate about tackling complex social problems from mental illness to drug dependency and domestic abuse that stop people, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, living lives they consider meaningful and worth living. My expertise lies in public service innovation and designing and developing creative ways of supporting citizens to support each other and themselves to achieve this.In 2009, Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of RSA, approached me to set up a policy and research programme on active citizenship. I have since developed the Citizen Power programme. This is a one million, two year programme of community based responses to social challenges in Peterborough, including problem drug use, anti-social behaviour and the need to improve relations between schools and the wider community. Alongside this, I am currently leading a one year programme of public service reform working with 45 senior public service professionals to re-think the design, delivery and evaluation of public services in Peterborough. I am also currently developing a new programme of work developing practical and innovative ways of reducing and preventing domestic abuse and related harms in the UK, particularly among young people.

I taught modern political thought (Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Mill, Kant, Hegel, Marx, and Nietzsche) to second year undergraduates. During this time, my research and writing focused mainly on the political thought of Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault.
