This was a senior leadership role within the organisation within which I shared responsibility for the successful operation and overall growth of the business. This included development and implementation of corporate strategy, setting and managing financial and technical targets, developing the staff and material resource and ensuring compliance with formal quality standards. My team’s activities covered the food supply chain from primary production to final product and involved working for a range of private and public sector clients. As part of the role I represented the organisation and associated industry sectors on a range of external committees.

Within this role I had responsibility for the milling and baking activities at Campden BRI and was part of the senior leadership team for the organisation. I represented the organisation on a range of external committees focused on the needs of these product sectors.

I represented Campden BRI in work with technical and managerial representatives of the global cereals and related industries and led the internal team focusing on their needs. In addition to the managerial aspects of the position, I also maintained a position as one of the senior scientists within Campden BRI. As such, I was responsible for project management of a range of work programmes funded by both industry and government in areas covering primary production and processing of wheat through to raw material, formulation and processing effects on baked product quality.

I was responsible for a team representing technician, technologist and scientist functions. This role involved managing the quality of the bakery work carried out, obtaining funding for, managing and reporting research and development activities and liaising with industrial representatives to carry out shorter term projects. Areas of activity included assessment of novel or alternative ingredients, identification and correction of faults occurring during processing and characterisation of overall quality of baked goods both after baking and following storage.

I managed large, multi-disciplinary research projects in the areas of factors affecting milling efficiency and final flour properties, the application of near infrared spectroscopy to the assessment of wheat and flour quality, the assessment of wheat endosperm texture and the use of near infrared spectroscopy to assess and ultimately control bakery mixing processes.

I worked on a European project entitled ‘Spectroscopic measurement of structural changes in starch in a hostile environment’. Near infrared, Photo-Acoustic and Raman spectra of extruded starch-based materials were taken and analysed using statistical techniques such as Principal Components Analysis and Canonical Correlation Analysis.
