It's the kind that makes you see your own power—and then forces you to decide what to do with it.A question that makes you think for yourself, about yourself.A question to make you sovereign. As a rabbi, I’ve officiated at nearly 100 funerals. Being present at the end of life has given me a unique perspective on what it means to live a good one, and invariably the most fulfilling lives have been sovereign ones. Not safe lives. Not comfortable lives. I’m talking about lives full of difficult choices and responsibility taken, people loved and people shunned. Lives lived on roads less travelled, or carved afresh, with opinions held strongly and without apology. Lives lived not from habit or convention, but from a bone-deep conviction about how the world ought to be.I am determined not to live a life that anyone else could have lived, and I help others do the same. If we spend our time on this earth mimicking others, we become just so much evolutionary background noise, insignificant blips in the history of the universe. Truth is, we’ll probably end up that way anyway, but when I’m gone, I want there to be a Sam-shaped hole in the universe. I want there to be a you-shaped hole in the universe too. That's why I ask dangerous questions. Questions that challenge not just what you believe, but why you believe it. Questions about who you are beneath the layers of shoulds and supposed-tos. Questions that reveal the difference between the story you're living and the story you're meant to live.So … may I ask you a question?
