About Sam Nelson
I am a long-time educator and writer currently interested in helping students build relationships to plant life and urban ecosystems in their communities. I work to creatively weave equitable plant studies into both standards-based science and ELA core curriculum in engaging and meaningful ways. I have worked for about ten years as a classroom teacher in primary schools and in adult education, primarily focused on literacy and writing. Additionally, I have worked in conservation, environmental education, and urban forestry. I'm committed to integrating botanical education into ELA curriculum and narrative writing in schools and communities. I am a professional writer with a long list of publications in creative journals, magazines, and online news sites. I recently earned a master of arts at the University of Utah's Environmental Humanities graduate program, where I studied critical plant studies in relation to children's literature and education. I wrote a middle-grade novel about trees and developed curricular guides about climate change and plant relations, informed in large part by Native Studies, to help students develop personal relationships to urban plant communities through empirical connections and narrative writing. In addition, I taught a section (WRTG 2010) of undergraduate writing and rhetoric in multiple modalities, including online, hybrid, and in-person. I have taught writing from 1st grade to college level, as well as to ESL adult students. I believe science and literary arts are natural partners inside and outside of the classroom.
