Senior Design Sponsor: NASA Cyro LabProject Objective: Design a permanent dwelling to house astronauts on the surface of Marsthat would generate electricity utilizing indoor/outdoor temperature variances and determinefuture technology needed.- Conducted extensive research to identify temperatures on Mars, potential dwelling material,number, type, and size of thermoelectric generators.- Designed numerous inflatable structures with embedded thermoelectric generators in wallsurfaces using MATLAB.- Tested structure model using variable ambient temperatures, wall materials, size, wallthickness, and number of thermoelectric generators.-Collected and analyzed data to identify optimal design.Results: Determined that while the thermoelectric generator method would work, moreelectricity could be saved with increased wall insulation, decreasing the need for generation.Presented 150-page design to NASA Cryo Lab engineers and scientists in Kennedy SpaceCenter in Florida: initial research, MATLAB designs and test data, source code, lab test data,and supporting images.
