About Sam Nolan
My background is both as an experienced lead academic developer and nationally recognised educator and researcher with a background in developing and delivering strategy and enhancing pedagogy through research-based learning. My research started in the discipline of physics but has increasingly moved into the area of education and its leadership, with a growing emphasis on the latter. My work is centred on enhancing student learning through working with students as partners, helping drive and shape the curriculum pulling on innovative approaches to e-learning as and when needed. Across my career I've been actively driven to find solutions to complex problems in Higher Education. An early example was the development of new virtual approaches to practical science, which has supported first-year undergraduates as they enter the physics laboratory for the first time. This work led to great engagement with laboratory learning, but also to further collaborative projects with colleagues in Durham (Chemistry) and across the UK and Europe. I lead the Transitions project which supports all Durham undergraduates as they make the Transition into University through an online course delivered pre-arrival. In 2016 over 3800 students used this site successfully. A sister project focussing on Durham's Postgraduate student community is under development. See video below for more details on this work.Alongside this, working with colleagues across the institution, I developed a national conference for Teaching Focused Academics, giving those employed primarily for teaching in Higher Education a chance to share scholarly activity across disciplinary boundaries and develop a national voice.Since 2018 I have been involved with bringing together 5 departments at Durham University to form the Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) which includes educational development, researcher development, digital learning, a Foundation Year, a MA TESOL programme and EAP pre-sessional and in-sessional courses and support. I also developed Durham's Education Laboratory which I led from 2018-2023. Between 2018-2023 I served as Assistant, then Deputy Director of DCAD. During this time I continued to engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning including producing a range of talks and books, including on Education Leadership and Bringing Creativity to Physics Teaching. In July 2023 I took over as Director of the Durham Centre for Academic Development.
Listed skills include Teaching, Higher Education, Research, Public Speaking, and 21 others.
